This week in the Dads Toolbox we are bringing you Karen Whittier of Play & Grow. This is a new type of company working with parents to engage with their kids in new ways and to provide high quality toys that are safe and fun right to your doorstep! Play & Grow is a company that goes back to Karen Whittier’s dad. She had an unconventional upbringing with a dad that challenged her and involved her in a lot of hands-on-education. This Hands-on education led her first to a career in engineering and then to education. Play & Grow is a company that allows parents to rent toys for one, two or three weeks or even join on a subscription basis. Parents can go on the website, look at the toys and select the toys that they want. These toys are meant to be ones that will encourage engagement between parent and child. Current Play and Grow is only in King County, near Seattle but Karen is considering expanding. Play and Grow allows parents to try out toys for themselves before they choose to purchase (if they choose to purchase). It also limits the amount of “stuff” that becomes accumulated within the home. Play and hands-on experience is what the Play and Grow experience is all about. To do this Karen Whittier chooses the toys for her company by playing with the toys herself. She also looks for toys that can be cleaned easily, are made of natural materials and are safe for children.
