The Solver’s Edge

Kate Rushton, a Solver: Open Innovation taps out the unrestricted parts of you

Listen Later

Hello solvers,

Welcome to The Solvers Edge Podcast, the podcast that takes you on a journey of why, how, and when does open innovation matter.

I’m your host, Iliriana Kacaniku and our guest today is Kate Rushton. Kate is a solver, one of those innovators anywhere, who does not hesitate anytime to put her knowledge, expertise, curiosity, and wisdom to test and innovate as said ‘in her own words “something unexpected and unseen before” and “sometimes tap out those unrestricted parts of you.”

To date, she has participated over 50 challenges and won several of them. With so many challenges in her portfolio, I was curious to learn what drove her to engage with the challenges and how she experienced them as an end-user.

From this conversation I came out with four key takeaways.

  • If you’re a solver,
    • Start exploring open innovation challenges, and tap out those unrestricted parts of you.  You never know what innovation you may come up with.
    • If you’re a seeker, then consider:
    • Leverage the experience of former solvers and winners to design your next challenge experience that will matter to them as well
    • Open up the challenge design process and design along the people most affected by a problem, and
    • Remember that open innovation challenges can positively impact the seeker’s  brand by the ability to create positive or improve existing perceptions that solvers have about the company
    • What about yours? What learnings did you take from this conversation? Feel free to share them with us at [email protected]. We would love to hear from you.   In the interim, follow us on Spotify, or Apple Podcast, or Google Podcast and subscribe to our newsletter so you do not miss out on our next episodes.
