A career criminal headed for a life of dodging between petty thievery, prison and the street was never going to have a happy ending. Ending in murder, Kate Webster’s life was a sad existence which not only saw her take the life of another but also ended up being hanged for her crime.  Over a 100 years later, kate’s victim, Julia Thomas’ skull was found in an excavation for an extension. Igniting a forgotten case and eventually bringing the horror of the events at 2 mayfield cottages to a close.

In the Victorian era in London, the city sat under a black shroud. 
The capital was in mourning for a lost monarch and its residents were ushered under the wing of sadness to join in with the bereft queen. 
As this sadness swept the nation, the resulting impact had a strange effect. Pair this with the recent industrial revolution which could make items faster and also had a habit of sending workers to an early grave, a whole industry was created which serviced those who had been touched by deaths’ boney hands or more importantly, those it left behind.

The Real Reason Victorians Were Obsessed with Death! | Victorian Mourning Practices

At 6:52 on the 19th of January 1917, an event would occur which would change an area of London for decades after, irreparably damaging it. 
A munitions factory in the heart of the bustling industrial area of Silvertown had hastily replaced the production line of a former caustic soda factory and was now in the hands of people who didn’t know what they were doing with such a dangerous material. 
With world war one dragging on and driving the country into an ammunition shortage, England created several huge munitions factories to deal with the crises and over the period of 3 years, 3 of them would be reduced to smouldering ruins when their stock exploded.

The Violent Female Terrorists That The IRA copied! | The EXPLOSIVE Fight To Win The Vote

300 women were penned into parliament square and thrown to the mercy of the male crowd and given the order to "Do with them as they wished" This violent assault lasted 6 hours and unarmed women were beaten, attacked and then arrested all because they wanted their cry of "Votes For Women" to be heard! On part 3 of our Suffragette series we take a look at the bitter battle of Black Friday and the turning point in the campaign to gain the female vote. 
The 1800's ushered in a new way of life for everyone and the Industrial Revolution wasn't called that just because of the machines. This new reign of technology heralded in a new era in workers rights or in fact highlighted that...there were none! Pair this with the fact that only 4500 men in England were allowed to vote, this meant working class people had no say in what happened to them and they were angry! 
Today on Macabre London, we uncover Black Friday, an event which made the gentle suffragettes turn to violence all in the name of gaining the vote.
