My Life is the Medicine

Kelly Hancock - Elementary Teacher, Educator, Mother, Wife, Personal Trainer - Part 1

Listen Later

In this episode, we meet Chuck’s partner Kelly, and we have a raw and vulnerable conversation modeling the core of what this podcast is about - using our own lives and our own relationship as the fertile ground of wisdom and medicine.  It feels like we both went deep and yet still barely scratched the surface of our 25 shared years together in this 2-hour conversation split over 3 episodes.  We touch on the origin story of our relationship, allowing it to be what it is and how each of our lives and our relationship have evolved through challenges and celebrations.  Some of the big topics include grief, disordered eating, women’s bodies and women’s health, partnered relationship challenges, adoption/attachment, misguided attempts at personal growth and relationship communication and transforming those wounds and challenges into gifts.

Kelly's Episode Highlights:
Episode 1: Unconscious origins of our relationship, Grief, Kelly’s dad’s death
Episode 2: Female body health - inhabiting your own body, not the story of what your body should be, health and wellness born from disordered eating, more grief, parenting
Episode 3: Summarizing the conversation and looking closer at some of the dysfunctional relationship patterns fueled by our individual struggles that created the opportunity for individual and relationship growth. Reflecting on the unwanted life experiences and lessons that have brought such wisdom, joy, and gratitude.

This poem by David Whyte summarizes nicely:

Those who will not slip beneath
the still surface on the well of grief,
turning down through its black water
to the place we cannot breathe,
will never know the source from which we drink,
the secret water, cold and clear,
nor find in the darkness glimmering,
the small round coins,
thrown by those who wished for something else.

The Well of Grief
