Kendrick Keys: Care Packages and Crab Cakes, Baltimore

Listen Later

In 2020 and early 2021, the Peale participated in the Lexington Market Public History Initiative in an effort to collect stories and memories about the world-famous Lexington Market as the market itself prepared for a redesign and reopening. The initiative’s core partners were Baltimore Heritage, Baltimore Public Markets Corporation, Lexington Market, Inc., Market Center Community Development Corporation, Seawall, and the Peale, and the work was partially enabled by a Pathways Grant from the Maryland Center for History and Culture. This project was financed in part by the Maryland Center for History and Culture’s Thomas V. “Mike” Miller History Fund.
Kendrick Keys: Well, I can tell you there was a special spot my mother would go introduce me to the place that was important to me, because it was where I received my care packages from when I went away to college. My mother would go to a specific stall for chocolate chip cookies and for gummy bears, and throughout my college days, I would receive, from Lexington Market, chocolate chip cookies and gummy bears from one particular stall. Like I said, it holds fond memories, because as a child I went there and got these things, and my mother continued that treat for me when I got to college. So yes, we had specific places; everyone had their favorites. Even though different places may sell the same items, you had your specific place you went.
Kendrick Keys: Not to mention crab cakes in the back of the Lexington Market, it was like entering a different world. You went into the fish market in the back, and it was just magical. People would sit around eating raw oysters. I had one cousin that would visit from Brooklyn, New York, and every visit we would have to take him back to that fish area where he would eat raw oysters and stand up. I would watch the entire... It was almost like a well-planned out theatrical performance on how he ate the oyster, with Tabasco sauce, and throwing his head back. It was really fun to watch my big cousin eat these oysters. We would all get crab cakes, and, of course, mom would get fish to take home.
