Today is January 1, 2017. Travel back with me to this day in 1940. Today we’re in the office of baseball’s first Commissioner, Federal Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, and we’re about to witness Judge Landis use all the power of baseball’s highest office to create some of the game’s first free agents, more than a generation before Curt Flood will become the game’s most famous free agent of them all.
