Kerala and Tamil Nadu voters in a devastating stage of mental befuddlement say top psychiatrist

Listen Later

With the euphoria of the elections dying down and both sides finally taking a break from the constant verbal war of words of social media, the overall confusion of the population in the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have now come to the fore.
The states have had a different path to where they are now. Tamil Nadu ushered in a new government and a first time Chief Minister while Kerala broke the 40-year-old trend of anti-incumbency and re-elected the only communist government in India. Both these results were a field day for the media who launched various analysis and assessments on the developments.
The DMK leader M K Stalin has taken up the Chief Ministerial spot after waiting in the wings for over 30 years. His father the late former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M Karunanidhi, was a 3 time Chief Minister and considered to be Jayalalitha’s greatest adversary. Stalin has assumed office and taken a grip on the functioning of the state.
The Pinarayi Vijayan led LDF government on the other hand managed to keep their party in power by easily brushing off a spirited BJP and also a concentrated effort by the Rahul Gandhi led UDF. The government is set to conduct the oath-taking ceremony this week. The preparations including inviting 500 guests for the swearing-in ceremony when the district of Thiruvananthapuram is under “Triple Lockdown” is inviting a lot of criticism.
The trend where the Indian voter feels immediately betrayed after voting for an election has not changed. There are usually 3 reactions to this.
Die-hard supporters of the winning party are extremely vocal and try to justify the government’s decision by creating as much noise as possible and putting forward justifications even when not asked.
Many who supported the winning party tend to hide their emotion as the policy that the government has implemented was not what they voted for.
The non-supporters of the government usually launch into an “I told you so” tirade. This is usually followed by demonstrations and protests disturbing the law and order situation of the state.
However, this time around, all voters seem to have stepped back from adopting any of these usual options and have been exhibiting a different behaviour according to a top clinical psychiatrist in the city, Dr Nair.
