August 12, 2024 ~ Lucy Ann Lance talks with Kevin Fischer, NAMI Mi. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the largest grassroots mental health organization in the U.S., founded in 1979. It aims to improve the lives of those with serious mental illnesses and their families through advocacy, education, and support. NAMI operates across all states and over 1,100 local communities, including Washtenaw County, where it will host a fundraising event, NAMI Walks, at the University of Michigan on September 8th. Kevin Fischer, the executive director of NAMI Michigan, notes that more than 80% of NAMI’s members have personal experience with mental health issues, highlighting the organization’s deep connection to the community it serves.
