You need to stay up to date with the latest trends, do research into best practices and continuously expand your knowledge and skills, you can’t stand still because other people will take the position. You should build a strong personal brand by developing a clear and consistent message about your skills and expertise as well as building a strong online presence through social media, blogging, YouTube, podcasting, etc.
