Key to Living a Long & Prosperous Life
1 Peter 3:10-11
“For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭3:10-11‬ ‭NIV‬‬
Do you love life?
Do you desire to enjoy your life?
How about a good long life?
Then the scriptures say, you must keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech.
In yesterday devotional, I spoke to you about the quality of your thoughts and how they affect your life.
I am so thankful that today’s topic follows in succession because both of these are closely related.
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭23:7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
“… For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭12:34-37‬ ‭NKJV‬)
These verses of scripture tell us the important connection between our thoughts and what we say.
Have you ever found yourself in a heated argument and you ended up saying things that you regretted afterwards? Those regretful words that came out of your mouth - where did they come from?
Even if you could not admit it - those words have been on your mind - in your subconscious and the anger gave you a platform to express them.
As Jesus said in Matthew 12 - we all speak out of the treasure we have kept in the mind even if we fail to admit them.
Jesus continued in verse 36-37continued and warned us
… I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it on the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭12:36-37‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
How do we keep our tongue from evil and our lips from deceitful speeches?
You must “… let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:37‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭4:23-24‬ ‭NIV‬‬
In an attempt to feel belonged, you might want to revert back to your old way of speaking when you are among your unbeliever friends - that’s why it is important to keep your distance from places or people that will draw you back into those evil ways. The best way to do this is to let them know where you stand. I used to have colleagues that will tell each other in my presence not to use profanity because I was there.
I’ll conclude with James 3:9-12 on the need to bridle our tongue:
“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth comes praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both freshwater and saltwater flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.”‭‭James‬ ‭3:9-12‬ ‭NIV‬‬
And these are my favorite prayers when it comes to my words:
““The Lord God has given Me The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak A word in season to him who is weary. ...” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭50:4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
Pray: Father, give me the tongue of the learned that I may know how to speak a word in season to anyone who is weary.
The second prayer is found in Colossians 4:6
“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
Pray: Father, let my speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that I may know how I ought to answer everyone
In Jesus’ name we have prayed Amen! Amen!! Amen!!!
