1. Read Repeatedly

That is, read through a passage more than once. By reading the text repeatedly, you can answer many of your own questions. After I’ve read a passage only once, there are naturally questions that arise out of the text.

Why did this happen?

What’s the author’s point?

How is this relevant?

But when we have read through a text multiple times, we catch things that we previously missed and just might answer our own questions. It’s not unlike watching a film for the second, third, or fourth time. I’m a fan of The Lord of the Rings and have seen the movies several times, but I always catch something I never noticed before.

2. Read Thoughtfully

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. — Josh. 1:8

His delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. — Psa. 1:2

3. Read Patiently

If we read repeatedly, thoughtfully, and patiently, we will never walk away saying, “That was a complete waste of my time.” Instead, God will open our eyes to his riches that so many others pass over because they lay buried in literature that isn’t the easiest in the world to read.
