This shiur will trace in our parsha the culmination of ‘’Mishna
Torah,’’ a new relationship to Torah relevant to the Jewish people now, after they
have matured over forty years in the dessert. They have now ‘’come of age’’ and
are ready to assume responsibility for the Torah as their own. This is
reflected by the characteristic of Mishna Torah as ‘’The Torah Sheba’l Peh
(Within Torah Shebekesav),’’ i.e. a Torah of creativity forged by the people’s initiative.
Hashem trusts us to maintain fidelity to His Torah, even as we develop
it for ourselves; He is like the father who trusts his adult child to upkeeping
the values of his chinuch even as the child pursues his own destiny.
