We are not just cruel to each other and to ourselves, we are cruel to the world. We might think our crimes against the natural world have little moral bearing because those beings less intelligent than us are inherently less valuable, and thus their suffering is less bad. That may be true, but when smaller amounts are piled up in the billions... perhaps when our ant hill is kicked, we will deserve it.
