Dave Mac's Local Legend

Kieran Connolly Local Historian

Listen Later

Having already discussed Cork’s GAA Holy Trintiy of Croke, MacCarthy and Maguire, Dunmanway man Kieran Connolly is back with the fascinating story of Skellig night, Ireland’s ancient answer to Mardi Gras or Carnival, a Shrove Tuesday tradition.Discussed in the podcast is a painting of Skellig night by James Beale which is on display in the Crawford Art Gallery. It takes in the view of the Grand Parade in 1845. The idea behind Skellig Night is to shame those who were single, by pouring water over single women in the aim of purifying them and tying them to the nearest, Tree,Fence or Pole until they were rescued.
