Malcolm Turnbull's coalition has a razor-thin, one seat majority with the federal election next year.
Sky News chief political correspondent Kieran Gilbert says the Coalition's behind in the polls, and needs a big winner to hold on to power.
Tax cuts are likely for low and middle-income earners, with those at the higher end signalled to get one in the future.
Gilbert told Mike Hosking there won't be much extra cash available.
"About a $1000 a year we are told so that's not too bad. Its about $10 a week as one of the former minister said deriding a tax cut is a sandwich and a milkshake."
