DEALER’S CHOICE - On our third go around of Dealer’s Choice, Paul picks a movie that we all have fond memories of: hitman procedural / kitchen sink drama / folk horror Kill List (2011), directed by Ben Wheatley.

Blending crime thriller, psychological horror, and folk horror, Kill List follows a former soldier who returns to work as a contract killer, only to become entangled in a series of increasingly disturbing events.

Wheatley set out to make a horror film inspired by the gritty crime films of the 1970s and the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft. Originally planned to shoot in the Philippines, the project ultimately became a low-budget British production, starring Neil Maskell, who was cast as Jay after previously working with Wheatley.

To create more natural performances, many scenes were filmed twice - first as written, then with the cast improvising dialogue and expanding on their characters’ backstories. Wheatley later removed much of the script’s exposition during editing, intentionally leaving the film open to interpretation and allowing its unsettling mystery to unfold without clear explanations.

Rather than relying on traditional horror conventions, Wheatley drew on themes of domestic tension, economic uncertainty, and the psychological effects of violence. The film’s mysterious cult was deliberately left unexplained, while its shocking bursts of brutality were designed to keep audiences uncertain about where the story was heading.

Although Kill List received modest attention on its initial release, it has since become one of the defining British horror films of the 2010s. Its blend of crime drama, psychological horror, and folk horror has earned it a lasting cult following and established Ben Wheatley as one of the UK’s most distinctive genre filmmakers.
