As families prepare for Thanksgiving, few are aware of the controversial methods the poultry industry has used to contain recent bird-flu outbreaks, including ventilation shutdowns and other mass-culling techniques that animal-welfare groups have condemned as inhumane. At the same time, federal records show that many poultry operations receive substantial government compensation for outbreak-related losses—often totaling millions of dollars. Critics argue that these payouts amount to a form of corporate welfare, propping up an industry whose production practices may contribute to recurring disease risks.
