Kimjang， the traditional practice of making kimchi， may soon be included on UNESCO`s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list， government officials announced. “The reasons why we selected kimjang to be a contender for the UNESCO cultural heritage list/ is because it is a very important part of our culture and we hope that/ we will be able to /continue to keep this precious tradition alive.” the official explained.

김치를 담그는 전통적 관행인 김장이 유네스코 인류무형유산에 곧 등재될 것 같다고 정부관계자들이 밝혔다. 관계자는 “김장을 유네스코 문화유산의 도전자로 선택한 이유는 김장이 우리 문화의 매우 중요한 일부고 이 소중한 전통을 살려나갈 수 있기를 바랐기 때문”이라고 설명했다.

문화재청의 이예나 관계자는 “한국 가정의 90%가 아직 집에서 김장을 담고 있으므로 김치는 우리 문화의 커다란 부분이다”고 말했다.
