What is a promise? On the receiving end, it's an expectation of surety for the future. Granted, that can be negative or positive. Being promised to be disciplined as a child isn't exactly fun. There are certainly promises of discipline in the Bible for God's people. 

But God's promises to his children are always for their good. God's promises give us hope and peace that we are loved and cared for and known. They give us the courage to press on in faith, not because of the gift, but because of the one who gives. God keeps his promises, and, through David, He teaches us to trust him.
