After Solomon became king of Israel following his father David, God appeared to him in a dream at Gibeon and told him to ask for anything he wanted. Instead of asking for wealth, power, or a long life, Solomon asked for wisdom to govern the people well and distinguish between right and wrong.

God was pleased with this unselfish request and granted Solomon great wisdom—making him the wisest man who ever lived. God also gave him riches and honor, even though he hadn’t asked for them.

This story is found in 1 Kings 3:3–14 in the Bible and is often cited as an example of humility, discernment, and the importance of prioritizing wisdom over material gain.
