This was a significant event in English history, and it was done largely because Henry wanted to have his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled. The Pope at the time, Clement VII, refused to grant the annulment, so Henry took matters into his own hands and declared himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England. This allowed him to annul his marriage and marry Anne Boleyn.
