Welcome to Know Your Pet and Vet!

Over the past 40+ years that I have been in practice, I've been seeing a disturbing trend of pet owners not getting the same veterinarian for care with each visit to the vet. Or at the very least, they aren’t being given a choice of veterinarian and technician. This Roulette Wheel like experience of someone new every time leaves clients feeling like they are just a commodity, another box to be checked off the to-do list of the veterinary staff. Some of my behavior clients have even commented that the veterinary staff is not reading the notes in the record from the previous visit, further dissolving any trust in how much the staff care for this pet.

A relationship centered practice takes the time to schedule clients with the same veterinarian and/or technician to insure continuity. Some practices, no matter what the size, may not value building the veterinarian/client relationship. As a veterinarian, I have experienced both types of practice cultures, and I want to share what it is like for the team, the client, and the pet.

In this episode I share with you how to deal with high veterinary bills. Sticker shock over veterinary bills has been an issue for clients for years. Recent articles have talked about why this is a growing issue but not what you can do to manage immediate costs. 

After 42 years of practice, I have learned how to help clients approach the cost of care in the moment: when they cannot afford all the tests or medications, but their pet needs help now. Talk to the veterinary team about what your financial limits are, and ask can be done to improve your pet’s health.
