In the waning years of the 18th century, as the Constitutional Convention was putting the finishing touches on what would become the constitution and Bill of Rights of the United States, Benjamin Franklin wrote to a friend of his in France.
The Founding Father said "Our new Constitution is now established, everything seems to promise it will be durable; but, in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes." Just a few months later Franklin would die at the age of 84............but at 243 years old, the United States of America lives on and the constitution continues to be the glue that holds the country together.
But in the first decades of the 21st century, when we have advanced technology the Founding Fathers could never dream of..............fast moving information...........social media..........and arguably the most unconventional president in our history........is America still the America that Benjamin Franklin and his colleagues envisioned? Is the constitution in need of an update, or a makeover?
Just some of the questions we pose to a group of scholars and historians on this July 4th holiday during a very special edition of KNX In Depth.
