Sixty four years before Donald Trump was born in Jamaica Hospital in Queens, New York, the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, in 1882, wrote a play he called, "An Enemy of the People." It was NOT about the press, but it was a catchy title and turn of phrase. So much so, that now President Trump has clearly taken a liking to it. Only Mr Trump uses enemy of the people to refer to the news media. Today, more than 300 newspapers ,and some broadcast outlets, sanswered back in their own editorial voices. And so, for the next hour, we will go In Depth on this.
The United States Senate today actually passed a unanimous resolution that states the press is NOT the enemy of the people and also reaffirms the vital and indispensable role the free press serves. The Senate resolution condemns the attacks on the institution of the free press. Not every news organization elected to join this extraordinary showing of solidarity. So, we will look into the reasoning behind that, too.
