California has the destructive history with earthquakes, it has the technological capabilities and, with one of the biggest economies in the world, it certainly has the money.......
.......so then why don't more buildings in California have the absolute best in earthquake-resistant standards? Turns out that quake-prone countries like Japan have been designing high-rise buildings that can survive huge earthquakes........but here in California, only a fraction of the buildings are built that way----we will go in depth.
It was 30 years ago today that Chinese tanks rolled into Tiananmen Square in Beijing to crush the student-led uprising there, leaving an estimated 10-thousand people dead in the resulting massacre. In the decades since, it could be argued that civil liberties and democratic freedoms have actually decreased in China. Coming up on In Depth, we talk with one of the student leaders who helped to organize the anti-government protests.......and managed to escape with his life.
Greenhouse gases continue to be pumped into the earth's atmosphere at a record setting pace, to the point where we are now setting CO-2 emission records every single month.
And back here in Los Angeles, the city and county have poured hundreds and millions of dollars into solving the homelessness crisis. But today we learned that the homeless population here has actually grown, substantially.
