Listen Later

Kwame Christian and Michael McGovern, the host of the Reckless CEO podcast, are discussing business relationships and how they can help entrepreneurs scale their businesses. Kwame is a two-time best-selling author and CEO of American Negotiation. He explains that as he and Michael have advanced in their businesses, they have found it increasingly lonely. He notes that 1% of entrepreneurs are in this space, and this number exponentially decreases as the businesses become more successful. Michael and Kwame discuss how their conversations often last longer than expected and how important it is to be able to relate to another businessperson. They emphasize the need for relationships in business and how it can help entrepreneurs scale their businesses.
Michael and Kwame discuss the feeling of loneliness that can come with having success. They agree that the 1% of people who experience success think differently than the 99%, and this is what separates them. They also talk about the need to constantly evolve your thinking in order to continue to grow and to not become the ceiling for your team. The speakers mention that unchecked compassion can sometimes be a liability and that it may be necessary to make changes in order to focus on the mission and purpose. They suggest that having a franchise mentality can help in that it allows the speaker to focus on assembling the right players on the right team and to ensure that the team has the right chemistry.
In this conversation, Michael and Kwame explore the idea that in order to have an elite company, you have to have elite people in it. They discuss the importance of making tough decisions when it comes to personnel and recognizing that not everyone has the capability to be a Tom Brady. They talk about the importance of having a mastermind group and multiple business coaches to help grow and challenge yourself. They also point out the importance of accountability and setting expectations, so that if those expectations are not met, the decision to let the employee go should be made quickly. Finally, they emphasize the importance of wanting to win and having the drive to achieve success.
The conversation is about drive and ambition. Kwame explains that you either have it or you don't, and that he wishes he could turn it off sometimes. He recognizes that this trait is within himself, but also in others and acknowledges that you can't coach people out of it. He emphasizes that taking elite people with average people is one of the quickest ways to destroy a team. He advises to recognize this trait in yourself and others, as it can be a great asset for teams.
