LA Fishing Report: Tuna Blitz, Bass Bonanza, and Coastal Hotspots for Summer Action

Listen Later

Hey anglers, it’s Artificial Lure bringing you the freshest today’s fishing report for Los Angeles, Sunday August 24, 2025. If you’re rigged and ready for some summer action, here’s what the locals are seeing in our coastal waters and favorite lakes right now.

Let’s kick it off with the tide and sunrise. Tide-Forecast.com posts a low tide at 4:41 AM just under zero feet, then a strong incoming swing to a high at 10:59 AM peaking near 5 feet. The afternoon holds a mild low at 4:36 PM, before another high tide rolls in at 10:37 PM. Sunrise hit at 6:21 AM, sunset lands at 7:28 PM—plenty of daylight for morning plastics or chasing evening boil busts. Water’s sitting close to 70 degrees, a nice sweet spot for local species.

Weather’s classic late August: patchy clouds, moderate humidity, temperatures 62 to 68 degrees, but according to ABC News and several advisories, we’re on the tail end of an extreme heat warning for LA. So if you’re heading inland or up to Castaic or Piru, take the right precautions and hydrate heavy.

Now, what’s biting? SportfishingReport.com and “Reel Talk: Your Daily Catch Report” both say offshore and nearshore are hot right now. Boats trolling out by Catalina, Santa Monica Bay, and Redondo are scoring big: in the last two days, nearly 250 Bluefin Tuna landed (some topping 140 pounds), along with steady hauls of Yellowtail, Barracuda, Rockfish, Calico Bass, and Vermilion. Party boats reported strong amounts of Whitefish and Sculpin. Up at Castaic, largemouth are blitzing crankbaits, with one local angler reporting 27 fish yesterday—24 on the crank, three on frogs. That’s hard to ignore.

Bait and lures—listen up. Offshore, stick with *sardines*, live mackerel, or chunk bait for the Bluefin and Yellowtail. Artificial options like *surface irons* (mint, blue-white), X-Rap magnums, or big poppers are scoring when the bite’s up. Closer in, Calico and Barracuda are hammering *swimbaits*, *Kastmasters*, and the classic *chrome spoon*. For the rocks, use cut squid or Berkley Gulp strips for a reliable grab. In the lakes and local bass spots, it’s crankbait central: shad and chartreuse patterns, mid-depth runners, and don’t sleep on hollow-body frogs around grass lines.

Best hot spots for today:
- **Venice Pier** and **Redondo Beach Jetty**: sunrise and dusk bites for calico, barracuda, and a shot at yellowtail. Locals are throwing soft plastics and catchin’ plenty.
- **Castaic Lake**: bass haven right now; focus on main lake points and rip-rap with crankbaits or spinnerbaits in the morning, switch to frogs or Senkos when the sun’s high.
- **Long Beach Outer Harbor**: whitefish and sculpin hitting hard by the breakwalls; fresh cut bait is key.

Peak fishing times on the solunar chart are late morning (10:09 to noon) and a nighttime push from around 10:30 PM—especially for those live-bait tuna trips or late bass boils.

Reminder: with crazy heat and patchy weather, mind fire warnings up north near Santa Clarita and watch for rough surf if you’re fishing sandy beaches. As always, play it safe and keep an eye on changing conditions.
