A diamond in the rough
Zambrano, Guillermo. Pasaporte al infierno (Mexico City: Ediciones B, 2011). This novel, written in Spanish by a Mexican journalist-turned-fiction-writer now living in Miami according to Wikipedia, is not the authorâs first fictional attempt (I have not yet read his other works). Pasaporte strikes me as a diamond in the rough which also means that the editors at Ediciones B could have leaned on Zambrano even more so and they could have done some more work on the book title too.
The protagonist in this story is a private investigator named Constitucion (the name sounds better and is more plausible in Spanish than in English) who, Rambo-like, wishes to clear the world of the bad guys especially drug traffickers. For Rambo, or his counterpart, Dirty Harry Callahan, it doesn't matter if homicide is the way to cleanse our social order. This is what Pasaporte is all about and it takes place in Mexico City.
I was hoping Pasaporte would stand up as a fictional story framed around Mexico City culture especially drug trafficking culture but it didnât. It read more like a conventional detective thriller. Zambrano does in fact review Mexicoâs drug trafficking history including some unique information about key drug lords but he does so via some long-winded, stilted conversations between Constitucion and one of his close associates but nothing new, really. The author also transcribes overly long news reports word for word purportedly aimed at informing the reader about Mexicoâs nightmarish drug trafficking episodes, an unfortunate approach that I hope he omits in his newer work.
