To debut a new season of this podcast that is a mouthful, we examine the efforts of teaching an Aboriginal language in high school. Jandai is traditionally spoken on Quandamooka land and our guest, Kahli Dawkings, a Bundjalung woman, took on the task to teach it to her studnts at Cleaveland District State High School. Listen as she shares her practical experience in establishing a language program from scratch. Mind the wind and the outrigger! This is the spirit of this cheerful conversation with David Faunt, honorary linguist. David moved to Papua New Guinea in his early 20s. Since then, he ahs been compiling date on the language of his adoptive community: Bipi.

He tell us about his first impressions of the land, the things he did to learn the language, and his thoughts about the local customs, including the time he got lost in the open sea!

Sign Languages are so interesting and so dynamically diverse! They display features that are comparable to the ones of spoken languages. They even have something similar to a sound system! Come with us as we discuss her research on the Jagera language with PhD student Hana Hamilton. Through empowering communities, it is possible to enrich methods of revitalising endangered languages. We learn about community-based research, maintaining good practices, and becoming aware of cultural and historical barriers and trauma.
