In Ephesians 5:1-14 Paul continues to teach us what the new life in Christ looks like. Paul wants us to see that we are not only to walk in love but also in holiness – in the light of “all that is good and right and true” as verse 9 puts it! Both love and holiness are hallmarks of authentic Christianity. Therefore ,Paul teaches us that our new life calls us to purity and thanksgiving and also keeps judgement day in view.

In this sermon on Ephesians 4:25-5:2 we learn that since we are new people in Christ we are called to live new lives in him. We learn that the new life is an honest life, a life that deals with anger carefully, a life that builds others up and a life that walks in the love of Christ. Teaching us that a truly Christ-centred life is also a Christ-scented life, ‘a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God’ that reflects the atoning love for f Christ!

In the early church, when a new believer was baptised, sometimes they would take off old clothes before being immersed in water. This represented leaving behind their old life of ignorance and sin. Then afterwards they would put on new clothes representing who they had now become in Christ. The new outfit pictured the great change that takes place when a person trusts in Christ as Saviour and Lord. This is the change Paul is writing about in Ephesians 17-24! Paul wants us to see that becoming a Christian is life-changing in every way! He points to who we once were in contrast to who we now are in Christ, calling us to live in light of our new self!

In Ephesians 4:11-16 we see that Paul calls believers to maturity in Christ. In Paul’s mind growing up in Christ means growing together in Christ. This latest sermon in the Ephesians series explores what this looks like.
