In this episode of Will Bangura’s Dog Training Today, dog behaviorist Will Bangura explains the risks of laser pointer play in dogs and why chasing lights can become a serious behavior problem.
Although laser pointers may seem harmless, some dogs can develop intense fixation on lights, shadows, reflections, or moving visual stimuli. In some cases, this can contribute to compulsive behavior patterns, anxiety, frustration, hypervigilance, and difficulty disengaging from visual triggers.
Topics covered include:
• What laser pointer syndrome is
• Why laser chasing can become compulsive for some dogs
• How light and shadow chasing may affect behavior and emotional regulation
• Why dogs can become frustrated when they can never “catch” the light
• Early warning signs of fixation or compulsive behavior
• Why prevention is easier than treatment
• Why pet parents should stop using laser pointers for dog play
• How to reduce access to light and reflection triggers
• Using enrichment, scent work, food puzzles, and calm activities instead
• When to seek help from a dog behaviorist or veterinary behaviorist
• Why severe compulsive behavior may require veterinary support
Will also explains why dogs need outlets that allow them to complete natural behavior sequences. Unlike scent work, food games, tug, fetch with rules, or structured enrichment, laser chasing can leave some dogs in a state of unresolved arousal and frustration.
This episode is especially helpful for pet parents whose dogs chase laser lights, shadows, reflections, flashlights, phone reflections, sun spots, or moving light patterns.
