This is without doubt one of the most depressing books I have ever read. The characters are poorly drawn with obvious hate figures appearing more or less immediately enabling the reader to virtually predict the outcome of the story from the first few pages. The character of the ships captain, conversely, was overdrawn making you wish the miserable sod would be lost at sea before they hit Halifax. Were there ever such captains wracked with uncertainty and self doubt during the war. I doubt any such officer would have been given command of such important and crucial ships. I stayed with it until the end only to see if there were any twists later on. There wasn't. Leave it with Amazon.
