Publisher's Summary:
Last One Home by Debbie Macomber is a novel about persevering through tough times. It also shows how strong the bond between sisters can be.
Sisters Karen, Cassie, and Nichole have a happy childhood. They play hide-and-seek and other games with the children in the neighborhood. This changes when Cassie, at the age of 18, goes against the advice of her family and marries Duke Carter. She leaves her family after a terrible argument with them.
Duke is controlling and abusive. He prevents Cassie from contacting her family and keeps her isolated. The beatings grow so severe that Cassie fears she will die. She flees with their daughter, Amiee, to a women's shelter where they start their lives over again.
Cassie moves back to her home state of Washington after Duke is sentenced to jail for domestic abuse. She contacts her sisters, but their relationship remains strained.

Great companion to the novel
Iâve heard a lot about Debbie Macomberâs novels but Iâve never read any of them. I bought this Instaread to see if this is something Iâd be interested in. These summaries are reliably straightforward and always well written. This story centers on Cassie Carter who is divorced with a 12 year-old daughter named Aimee. She married against her family's advice and ended up with an abusive spouse. After her divorce, she must start over again working for minimum wage. She gets a break when she qualifies for a Habitat for Humanity house. That's a twist in a novel I've never seen before and I found it an interesting detail that made the story more authentic. It easily fits the romance category which Macomber is known for, but adds the realistic look at domestic issues, estrangement from family, and moving on from loss. This summary gave me a good idea of what to expect and helped me to decide on a purchase. I highly recommend it.
Nice summary. It helped me to decide.
