pretentious writing by an author who, in the past, has written a bunch of my fav books
I can't believe how many pages i skimmed over in this book. Eric is one of my fav writers (except for the Fantasy stuff) but this book is just so full of unrelated and irrelevant detail that it just became boring. It is always hard for me to read this style of book based in Russia where the place and people's names are just so long and similar that it becomes confusing. However, to flesh out the book with so much useless information about what each character is ruminating about in the back of their mind all the time just confused me even more.
The other thing I disliked about this book was that Eric uses a lot of obscure words and I seemed to be spending more time in the Kindle dictionary than in the book itself. Given that I read a book every day or so and have done so for many years I just felt that this writing style was just so Eric could show off his knowledge of obscure words and added nothing to the plot or book as a whole. The constant linking of events in the book to historical information from Roman times seemed pretentious as well.
Underneath there is a good story and some likable characters but the writing style of this book seems to almost be targeting some high brow academic rather than the usual reader of spy/thriller novels.
Book 1 was not great but it was way better than this one. I will be skipping the third one altogether.

The second installment has it's twists and turns that will keep you reading in till the end. It is so impressive that someone's mind could pick apart a problem and come up with a solution. I hope Jack will keep coming back with more adventures in the future.

The plot is grand and quite labyrinthine.
