In this episode, I talk to Rafael A. Martínez, an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University (ASU) in Southwest Borderlands whose work focuses on immigrant rights, mixed-status families, and Latinx cultural and historical productions in the southwest borderlands. Dr. Martínez’s book with the University of Arizona Press, Illegalized: Undocumented Youth Movements in the United States, analyzes the rise of Undocumented Youth Social Movements in the U.S. and immigrant youth’s contributions to the broader Immigrant Rights Movements.

In this episode, I talk to Dr. Gabriella Soto, a contemporary archaeologist who builds from archaeology’s attention to the material world to make sense of contemporary social issues, also drawing from ethnographic methods, GIS technology, and archival research. Her first book titled Border Afterlives: Migrant Deaths, Forensic Investigations, and the Politics of Haunting, is scheduled for publication for March 2026 with the University of Arizona Press.

In this episode, I talk to Dr. Shannon Archibeque-Engle from Colorado State University, where she serves as Associate Vice President in the Office of Engagement and Extension. Dr. Archibeque-Engle’s award-winning research focuses on an intersectional and critical analysis of higher education, particularly agricultural higher education, and she utilizes a variety of mixed methods including qualitative interviews, visual ethnography, quantitative analysis, and longitudinal assessment I met Shannon this summer when I attended the Higher Education Resources Leadership Institute.

Belinda has a BA from BYU, and MA and Ph.D in Sociocultural Anthropology from, the University of California, San Diego.

He is a Senior Lecturer of Special Education in the Educator and Leadership Preparation Department at Texas A&M University San Antonio where he has taught for 15 years. Armando attended Palo Alto College, UTSA, and the Higher Education Program at the University of the Incarnate Word. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and has served the southside community for over 40 years in social-service, first as a caseworker working with delinquent/truant youth in 5 southside school districts, as a Paralegal, a special education teacher in the Harlandale and Southside school districts, an arts advocate, and a conjunto musician (plays bajo sexto).
