I was listening to music recently — the Boomtown Rats, Banana Republic — and while the song is specifically about something else entirely, one phrase stuck with me. The idea of a place that calls itself modern, that performs progress, that wraps itself in the language of advancement — while underneath, absolutely nothing has changed. The same hollow power structures. The same people making the same bad decisions. Just with a new coat of paint and a fancier vocabulary.
