This is informative of the new Act 20 that just went into law this summer in Wisconsin. Act 20 will create new phonics reading initiatives for schools to follow.

How can I help my child/student understand what they read?  Here are two easy strategies that a parent or a teacher can use to help a student with comprehension as they read.  Using background knowledge helps activate connections to prior experience making it easier to relate to the material being read. The other strategy is story mapping, creating a timeline of events through writing or drawing pictures of events that happened in the chapter.  Both of these strategies help build the confidence and comprehension in a young reader.
