  • The quality of a leader’s thinking is paramount because it will dictate how they see the world, and the actions and results that they get. Leaders can have the greatest strategy, but they can be hijacked by their thinking. Over the last couple of years I’ve been looking at how our survival instinct can play out way more than we believe and are conscious of. 
  • Survival thinking can impact in five ways: 1. You can think you’ve got imposter syndrome which can definitely trip leaders up when they step into a more senior position. 2. The challenges of defensive mindset, where leaders aren’t great if there’s a mistake made or they get negative feedback. 3.  The challenges of ego and the need to protect self, which can be damaging to the leader themselves, but certainly damaging for the people around them. 4. Negative self-talk, often a lot of the thoughts we’re constantly having aren’t productive if they’re doubtful or negative. 5. Tribal behaviour, which can manifest in a number of ways including an ‘us and them’ mentality between managers and workers, or blame culture in different parts of an organisation, or you can get breakaway tribes where people that are potentially toxic can start to influence other people.
  • Get a better grip and understand the way that you think and your ability to have greater control over that. That’s been the greatest life lesson for me: that ability, as a human being, to raise your level of consciousness above your thinking to be able to disconnect from your thinking and be able to make better choices with your thinking.
  • A lot of our psyche is set up to make us feel not good enough. A lot of that originates from survival thinking because we are continually tracking and monitoring for things that can go wrong and we look internally at where we’re weak, vulnerable, and flawed. That leads the majority of people to spend too much time in that place where they’re not good enough – as an employee, business owner, leader, parent, husband, wife – and a lot of people under the surface are battling with that. You need to get to a place of self-love or where you feel good enough as a human being and contentment with yourself
