In this episode, Melissa Knight, RN, MSN, CNE is discussing the concept of moral courage as it relates to our personal value system and ethical dilemmas that we see in healthcare. Moral courage in this context relates to a preceding threat to one’s value system. As a servant leader, it requires one to commit to consistent introspection to examine one’s own value system and as well the effectiveness of establishing meaningful relationships and treating all humans respectively and equally. Many are willing to bend their own moral framework due to the consequences of standing up for what’s morally right lends to a risk of being violated, attacked or disregarded. Modeling moral courage is necessary for the succession of leaders who must establish organizational cultures that operate from a sound value system. Melissa challenges leaders and healthcare professionals to gain greater education related to moral courage and practice or role play the decision making process as one deals with a ethical dilemma.
