Most EDI training tells people what to think. Almost none of it tells people what to say next.
In this episode, Esi is joined by Nzinga Orgill, founder and CEO of AVI2I, who has spent her career turning EDI theory into something people can actually use in the moment, in real conversations, with real stakes. Nzinga walks through the Three Rs framework she developed after watching brilliant training land and then fall apart the second someone had to have an actual difficult conversation, along with what she is seeing work inside organisations right now.
Esi and Nzinga also open up about their own lived experience, growing up mixed race in Birmingham and in the north of Scotland, the assumptions people made about them, and how that shaped the work they now both do. It is a conversation about language, but it is really a conversation about power, access and what it actually takes to build a culture where people are not just present in the room, but heard once they are in it.
If you are an EDI lead trying to move a stalled agenda forward, a manager or L&D director looking for something practical to take back to your organisation, or a disabled listener who has felt the impact of careless communication firsthand, this episode gives you a framework to work with and two people worth following for more.
In this episode:
● Why "we don't discriminate" is the bare minimum, not the finish line
● The Three Rs framework: Read, Respond, Repair
● How to prepare for a difficult conversation you cannot fully prepare for
● What actually moves the needle on engagement, attrition and psychological safety
● Nzinga's story: name, heritage, and building a career from the frontline up
● Esi and Nzinga on resentment, tokenism and turning lived experience into purpose
● A simple first step for leaders who do not know where to start
