A Charming Slice of Life
I purchased this book during a free promo and figured I had nothing to lose. I was surprised at the negative reviews for this book. I honestly enjoyed it.
Mitch is a responsible, caring man and son, who visits his elderly mother each week. His normal visits take place on Sundays, but because his mother is ill on this particular Sunday (also a leap day), Mitch stops into his favorite coffee shop instead. What follows are several chance encounters with a variety of characters he might never have met.
This novel was slightly reminiscent of the writings of Carson McCullers, who just happens to be one of my favorite writers. Michael Eads writes in an open and direct style that I genuinely enjoyed and I find at times to be lacking in novels written by men. His characters come across as being empathetic and introspective, giving readers a glimpse at people who are at their most vulnerable. The theme of "everyone has a story inside them" is the thread that runs through this little gem of a book. It also shows us that sometimes people just need someone to listen to their story.
I recommend this book and urge readers to give it a try.
Enjoyable read
The book "Leap Year at the Coffee Shop" by Michael L. Eads was an enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more by this author. The interaction of the characters brought you right into the story. I would say well done Michael.
Good read
It was a good read, easy to pick back up after a few days of not reading it . Its nice
Not the story I'd hoped
The premise of the story was neat, the cover looked intriguing, the first two stories were good, then it all became a little boring. It's just that the story didn't really build up to anything. It was actually a series of coffee-chats with individuals in the cafe. That's it. There wasn't a build up, there wasn't an ah-ha, page turning "oh this is what's going to happen" kind of feeling. Honestly, it just didn't feel like it was pulled together into a complete book - it was just two people in a conversation then it's over, and oh, here comes another conversation.
If each of the stories had somehow tied together in the end; if the main character had developed a relationship with any of the folks; if there had been some sort of catharsis then I think I would have enjoyed it more. It also feels like there were things that were alluded to that could have been developed for more of a story-line (like how "special" the main character was, or how it was February 29th).
Sorry, I can't recommend it to any of my friends.
A Geat Rainy Day Read With A Mission
This book will have you thinking and remembering it long after you have finished . A coffee shop is the setting for the protagonist Mitch, who on this rainy day in Seattle, comes into the shop on a Sunday instead of Saturday.
