DF: Hello again everyone and welcome to Languagecaster.com – the football-language podcast for learners of English who love the beautiful game of football. Now, regular listeners will have noticed that we’ve had a short break over the summer – we could describe it as our close season – as we wait for the 2022-23 seasons to start up again. But there is a huge football tournament taking place in England over the summer: the 2022 Women’s European Championship and we’ve been posting some explanations of football language from this ournamnet here on our website at languagecaster.com, including ‘to drill’; ‘to seal’ and ‘to turn the tables on’.  And so on today’s podcast we take a look at some of the words and phrases from the first of the four quarter-finals beween hosts England and Spain. Thumped in the winner

The winning goal came in extra time when England’s attacking midfielder Georgia Stanway scored with a long-range shot to seal a come-from-behind win over Spain. The BBC described the shot as being thumped which means the ball was hit really hard indeed; Stanway thumped the ball into the net.
