DF: Hello again everyone and welcome to Languagecaster.com – the football-language podcast for learners of English who love the beautiful game of football. I’m Damian and I’m here in an extremely hot London and I’m one half of the languagecaster team, the other member of course is Damon who’s based in Tokyo, in Japan.
Now, regular listeners will have noticed that we’ve had a short break over the summer – we could describe it as our close season – as we wait for the 2022-23 seasons to start up again. But there is a huge football tournament taking place in England over the summer: the 2022 Women’s European Championship and we’ve been posting some explanations of football language from this ournamnet here on our website at languagecaster.com, including ‘to drill’; ‘to seal’ and ‘to turn the tables on’.  And so on today’s podcast we take a look at some of the words and phrases from the first of the four quarter-finals beween hosts England and Spain. And we’ll be look at how the winning goal from England’s Georgia Stanway was reported (from the BBC and from the Guardian newspaper).

Thumped in the winner

The winning goal came in extra time when England’s attacking midfielder Georgia Stanway scored with a long-range shot to seal a come-from-behind win over Spain. The BBC described the shot as being thumped which means the ball was hit really hard indeed; Stanway thumped the ball into the net.
