A University of Surrey study challenges the long-held belief that perfect pitch is an innate ability, demonstrating that adults can learn it through focused training. Twelve adult musicians participated in an eight-week online program designed to teach pitch class recognition, minimizing reliance on relative pitch. Participants showed significant improvement, with two achieving near-perfect pitch accuracy comparable to individuals with naturally occurring perfect pitch. This research suggests perfect pitch is a learnable skill, expanding understanding of musical cognition and adult learning potential. The findings are published in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review.
