Leave the World Behind is a popular new film on Netflix, depicting the failure of modern society, the collapse of communication and the struggle of seven humans to navigate a situation. We discuss the film through the lens of each character representing an element of US society, and the greater western world, and how each of those choose to react to the world, the challenges presented. Further, we discuss the city vs rural ideas, the scenario itself, the use of fear and racism in US discourse.
The film is slow at times, but does clearly present the idea that you can take down a modern society by removing access to information and then feeding existing fears, facilitating the destruction of a nation by creating the space for civil war.
