Psalm 32 teaches that forgiveness is not only the removal of guilt but the beginning of a restored relationship with God. After David confessed his grievous sin, God forgave him and promised to instruct and guide him in the way he should go. Rather than leading His people harshly like stubborn animals with bit and bridle, God desires tender hearts that willingly follow His guidance. The psalm contrasts the many sorrows of those who resist God with the mercy that surrounds those who trust in Him. Therefore, believers are called to live a continual life of repentance, confession, and joyful obedience, rejoicing that through Jesus Christ they are forgiven, guided, and surrounded by God's steadfast love.
