Taiwanese human rights activist Lee Ming-che, who has been in a Chinese prison for nearly four years, has been in the news over the past week. On Monday, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Chiu Tai-san urged China to let Lee’s wife to contact him as only Lee’s mother has been allowed to correspond with him.
But while Chiu said the government has already expressed its concerns to China, the top China policy-making body has come under fire for failing to do a good job in helping Lee’s family. New Power Party lawmaker Chiu Hsien-chih said while the MAC says that it has put a greater emphasis on Taiwanese nationals’ personal safety in China, Lee’s family has not been able to visit him since last year.
