Today we analyze the shifting political landscape in the U.S., exploring party realignments, the weakening of political parties, and voter polarization. Historically, the Democratic and Republican parties have swapped ideologies, particularly regarding civil rights.
More recently, political parties have become weaker as voters express cynicism regarding the role of special interests. This is also due to the rise of populist candidates and the impact of digital and social media.
Despite some individual shifts, studies indicate voters rarely switch parties, but shifts in the educational and racial composition of each party have occurred. Increased political polarization has led to deep divisions within both Democratic and Republican coalitions as well.
