Robert Zemeckis was an unemployed movie director at the start of the 1980s, but by the end of the decade he was one of the most successful blockbuster directors with films like Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? under his belt. He got his big break from Michael Douglas, who hired Zemeckis to direct an action-adventure romantic comedy film starring Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The movie seemed destined to flop; a rough cut screening for 20th Century Fox execs led to Zemeckis being fired from Cocoon, his next scheduled project for the studio. Upon its release, however, the film turned out to be a sleeper hit and was Fox's only box office success that year. Now we're grabbing a vine and swinging into 2022 with Romancing the Stone!
