After a successful franchise reboot with Batman Begins, auteur director Christopher Nolan leaned into the gritty aspects of the comic with a grounded take on the Clown Prince of Crime as the lead villain in a mob-centric tale of Gotham City. The sequel wildly outperformed the first installment, bringing in over a billion dollars at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing film of 2008.
