Twenty years ago, director Ridley Scott returned to the historical epic, the same genre that won him an Oscar in 2000 for Gladiator. Swapping the Roman colosseum for the Middle East in the time of the Crusades, Scott assembled an all-star cast including Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, and an uncredited Edward Norton. A post-9/11 movie about Christians fighting Muslims would have seemed an easy win at the box office, but the film performed poorly stateside while doing well in Arabic-speaking countries, especially Egypt. Scott blamed the failure on studio meddling; he has since disowned the theatrical cut, and claims instead that his director's cut is the definitive version. But art, like peace in the Middle East, can be elusive. Join us as we walk into battle with the Lord for Kingdom of Heaven.
